FLAVOR SIGNS DEAL WITH SOUTH AFRICAN RECORD LABEL

In a deal concluded late last week, Nigerian Highlife/Pop singer Chinedu Okoli popularly known as Flavour has put pen to paper in a management and distribution deal with a South African record label called “Soul Candi”Soul Candi’s Label Manager Allan Nicoll confirmed this news, “Flavour’s music has exploded in Africa and we are thrilled to be his home here in South Africa. We look forward to sharing his music with South African audiences”.Flavour deal with Soul Candi, will pave the way for his album, Uplifted, to be sold in South Africa. The self-proclaimed King of Nigerian highlife, is the man behind the hugely popular ‘Nwa Baby’— a song that has everyone from Nigeria to Kenya hooked. ‘Nwa Baby’ takes its inspiration from a classic highlife tune called ‘Sawa Sawa Le’ by Rex Lawson (c.1930 – 1971), one of the all-time highlife greats from Nigeria.
The highlife genre originated in Ghana as a blend of brass band music with the more danceable and less established rhythms of rumba and calypso in the 1930s. Highlife is very popular in Nigeria, Ghana and their neighbouring countries and is said to have paved the way for the better known afrobeat style.
While his debut album, ‘N’Abania’ had success in East Africa and Ghana, it was his sophomore release ‘Uplifted’ that saw his music and popularity cross borders into other African states like wildfire, ultimately becoming one of the biggest selling albums of 2010.
Soul Candi Records is no stranger to talent – the label is home to some of the most prolific stars of South African dance music including Micasa, Liquideep, DJ Fresh, Euphonik and Lulo Cafe. The label celebrated its tenth anniversary last year.
